Director's Report - February 2010

Monday, 15 February 2010 22:34

George ManosIn my first report as Director, I wish to give a big thank you to our immediate past Director, Lindsay Holmes and his partner Elizabeth for the wonderful job they have done over the last 2 years at Buddha House. Lindsay has tirelessly worked through a difficult period of change, making many personnal sacrifices for the sake of our centre. We rely upon people such as Lindsay to provide the inspiration for others to become involved in a meaningful way.

Others such as Henry Yap, have , and continue to offer service which is invaluable. Henry has now retired as Treasurer, but continues to advise and work in the office.  Henry has and I am sure will continue to be a valuable member of Buddha House.
We have also been fortunate with the depth of talent of the past Board:  Anita Crabtree with her extensive administrative experience, Sidonie Henbest's publicity and marketing expertise, and not least, Nadine Levy's legal wisdom.  Others whom I especially wish to thank are Lisa Pitman for her work as a graphic designer as well as her role with Jane Horton and their committee in organizing the Moon Lantern stall.

Quietly in the background, stimulated by Lindsay's special community meeting, the fundraising group collectively contributed to the fundraising letter that was recently sent out. Thank you so much to all of you.  Unfortunately, our failure to secure a site at Womadelaide this year, means the fund raising will need to become more innovative. Already Katrin and all the helpers have displayed their ability to run a successful quiz night, so I hope there are more to come. Cathy Davis has generously accepted the role of treasurer and has vigorously taken up her role in teaming up with our ever reliable book keeper, Sue Johansen and "banker", Judy Smissen.  The evergreen Hilary Marshall continues to fulfill her multi roles in the office, running the bookshop, training office staff, hosting school visits, and answering the phone in her spare time. There are others who have also contributed in different ways, so thank you to you all for the wonderful effort to keep our Dharma centre vibrant.

On the cusp of the holidays, we were delighted that the Gyuto Monks accepted a spontaneous invitation to chant in our gompa.  New and old students and children filled the gompa.  Gyuto tantric chanting is an ancient form of getting closer to our own clear nature, presented in a pure harmonic style. People commented that it left them serene and grounded.

It occurred to me when walking on the beach with my labrador, Bodhi, always searching for food, how cyclic existence is so linked to attachment.  We get attached to things always going right for us.  But when things go right for us or things go against us, it's the same thing. That's how we keep ourselves in samsara.  I hope I can remember this during the coming months!

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge that our Dharma centre remains open because of the cooperation of so many who willingly give up their valuable spare time. The pledges to our fundraising  efforts are coming in.  A special thank you to all those who have so generously responded.  Please remember that no amount pledged is too small.

George Manos,
Director
