Do I have to be a Buddhist?

A question our office volunteers sometimes is asked is: "Do I have to be a Buddhist to follow classes at Buddha House?" Although it might not be obvious for the person who asked this question, for those engaged in the activities of Buddha House the answer is: "of course not".

Buddhism is not a religion as such. You can see Buddhism as a toolkit for a happy and meaningful life. Anybody who is looking for a method to lead a happy and meaningful life can come to Buddha House to follow classes.

If you find something useful in the teachings that can help you in your life then you can take it with you. If you hear things you can't relate to just let them go. You don't have to accept everything, nor do you have to agree with everything. As the Buddha said: "Don't believe what I say, first check it out for yourself".
