Meditation - a most radical kind of political action

Tuesday, 03 November 2009 04:29

by Natalie Kagan

When we practie meditation and have a glimpse of inner freedom, which is our own true nature, we begin to see things differently. We are more observant about what enslaves people and makes it difficult for us. It allows us to see the difference between inner and outer freedom.

Meditation is the most radical kind of political action. We step outside the conventional value system and look at things from a different viewpoint. We are not likely to remain uncritical supporters of the status quo.

Meditation is not however activism as we usually think of it, but it fits the definition perfectly. It is an activity that fundamentally aims to change your view of the world.

Meditation brings out the best in us, our own intelligence and insights. It encourages our own individuality, our sense of compassion, and our sense of outrage as we gradually reveal our own true nature.

(Natalie has been leading meditation classes at Buddha House for nearly 20 years. Her dedication to offering these classes consistently and without reward is an indication of the development she talks about above. Currently Natalie is also leading meditation classes for the Australian Dance Theatre, who see meditation as an important part of their discipline. Natalie would like to mention inspiration for this article from Reg Ray – Tricycle Magazine)
