Discovering Buddhism (DB)

What is Discovering Buddhism? Discovering Buddhism is an introductory course designed to give participants the tools and skills needed to integrate Mahayana Buddhist practice into daily life.

The course consists of presentations, meditations, meditation days, and questions & answers.

By engaging in this program, you receive an experiential taste of the Buddha's teachings and some meditation retreat experience, and gain skills to make your life most meaningful. As such, this program is not designed as an academic study of Buddhism but is intended to actually change a person's life at every moment of the day.

It is recommended that students commit to the complete 2-year course and attend meditation days, though you are welcome to come for one module or one evening!

Led by a teacher or senior student, each session will include a presentation on the topic, group discussion and a meditation.

Discovering Buddhism Modules

Explore the process of death and rebirth and its impact on how we live our lives. Learn to fulfill your purpose in life, resolve conflicts, and develop the skills to help yourself and others at death.

Find out what it means to take refuge in the Three Jewels and the essential practices of refuge. Learn about the advantage of taking lay vows and their role in enhancing our spiritual growth. Also known as "Refuge in the Triple Gem" - Buddha, Dharma and Sangha - this is a key topic for Buddhists. It is the entrance to the path, the practice that leads to liberation and enlightenment.

Assemble the tools you need to develop a successful daily practice and find out the elements necessary to generate realizations. Get some tips for making every action meaningful.

Investigate what "samsara" is and how we are stuck in it. Find out what "nirvana" is and how to achieve it. Learn how to be free from suffering and empower yourself with practical tools to deal with and eliminate disturbing emotions forever.

Discover practices that develop our innate qualities of compassion. Learn to apply these techniques to generate the mind of bodhichitta, known as the very heart of Buddha's teachings.

Learn the disadvantages of self-cherishing and the advantages of cherishing others. Learn to employ the special techniques of mind training (lojong) to transform problems into happiness.

The realization of emptiness is crucial for the attainment of liberation and enlightenment. Learn to develop calm abiding and different methods of meditation on emptiness.

Learn what tantra is, how it works, and why it is a powerful form of practice. Get a broad overview of the four classes of tantra and learn to practice simple Kriya tantric methods. Learn to integrate tantra with lam-rim meditation for optimal results.

By undertaking intensive practices of purification and a two-week lam-rim retreat, you prepare your mind in the best way to realize the path to enlightenment. Purification practices include: 100,000 prostrations, 3-month Vajrasattva retreat, and Nyung Nä. This is a great way to seal the blessings of this program!

*Please note anyone can begin at any time during the Discovering Buddhism course, but a good place to start is the first evening of each new module, which is preceded with a short (approx 15 minute) introduction.

This course will present very practical ways to begin our own regular practice at home. It is critical that we utilize this life by training our minds not to be so reactive with anger and other afflictive emotions, but instead cultivate positive qualities that are of benefit to ourselves and others.

Become familiar with the elements necessary to generate realizations in the mind and receive some tips for making every action of the day meaningful.
