Biography

robina teaching 1998
Venerable Robina teaching in Adelaide 1998

Venerable Robina Courtin has been a Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition for thirty years. She is the Director of the Liberation Prison Project, based in the USA and Australia, which takes care of the spiritual needs of more than 3,500 prisoners in 500 institutions. Many of these are on death row or have life sentences and have been involved in gangs on the streets an in prison.

Ven. Robina was born in Melbourne, Australia and brought up as a Catholic. She studied classical singing until her early twenties. She went to London in 1967, where she lived for four years. She became actively involved in the radical left, working mainly with the London-based support group for black and Chicano prisoners. In the early 70s she became a feminist and returned to Melbourne in 1972 to work with other radical feminists.

In her quest for a spiritual path, Robina began studying matial arts in 1974 and moved to New York where she studied karate. She continued her studies in Melbourne until 1976, when she attended a Tibetan Buddhist course in Queensland given by Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

In November 1977 Ven. Robina went to Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal, where she was ordained. Since then, she has lived as a Buddhist nun, traveling, teaching and bringing the Dharma to people both in and out of prison.

Ven. Robina was the editorial director of Wisdom Publications until 1987, before moving to the FPMT’s international journal, ‘mandala’, as editor.

At the end of 2000 she resigned to spend more time teaching at Buddhist centres around the world and to devote her time and energy to the Liberation Prison Project.

Every year, ven. Robina leads the Chasing Buddha Pilgrimage, visiting sacred sites in India, Nepal and Tibet as a fundraising benefit for the Liberation Prison Project.

She is an extraordinary woman with boundless energy and charisma and her style of teaching the Dharma is sparklingly clear, direct and compassionate.

How to Register

How to Register for Events

  • Registration is essential for the Retreat and for the Weekend Teachings.
  • Registration is optional for the Public Talks (although is advised).

There are two ways that you can register:

  1. The old fashioned bookings form method - you know the routine - download the form, fill it out, then get it back to us by post, fax or in person, preferably with full payment :-)

click to downloadDownload a Printable PDF Registration Form - 190 Kb PDF .
Download it, then either fill it out & print (data cannot be saved), or print first then fill out with a pen.

  2. Why not try our brand new electronic method? We now have a shopping cart system where you can register and pay for events. Dont be shy, dive in and give it a go! If you are terrified of technology, then just stick with method 1 above (we won't tell anyone).

More Information

The cart is only a bookings and payment system - rely on these pages (in the What's On section) for actual event information.

Electronic Payments - the cart allows you to pay for the events using your credit card via PayPal (What is PayPal). You do not need a paypal account to do this - when at the PayPal payment page, look for the text link under the bold heading on the left hand side "Don't have a PayPal account?".

In the shopping cart Payment Options page (as part of the checkout process you select how you plan to pay for the events) you can also use an "Offline Payment" method. This simply means "any method other than the PayPal credit card method" - of which there are many:

  • Phone BH with your credit card info
  • Fax BH with your credit card info
  • Post your credit card info to BH
  • Post BH a cheque
  • Pay at the Office with cash

Make sure that your payment is clearly labelled.

Also note that your registration is not confirmed until payment is received.

The last time I saw Venerable Robina was some years ago - talking at the CWA I think.. She blew my mind! You'd be crazy to miss any of her events. Just like our own Jampa Gendun, Venerables Dondrub, Gyatso, and so many of the original FPMTers, she is is a true class act. Awesome insight into the dharma, and presented in a way that has you on the edge of your seat... I can't wait!
